A 12-year-old Afghan girl and her mother lose their jobs when the Taliban closes the hospital where they work. The Taliban have also forbidden women to leave their houses without a male “legal companion.” With her husband and brother dead, killed in battle, there is no one left to support the family. Without being able to leave the house, the mother is left with nowhere to turn. Feeling that she has no other choice, she disguises her daughter as a boy. Now called ‘Osama,’ the girl embarks on a terrifying and confusing journey as she tries to keep the Taliban from finding out her true identity. Inspired by a true story, Osama is the first entirely Afghan film shot since the fall of the Taliban.

For thirteen consecutive summers, the American Timothy Treadwell moved to Katmai in the Alaskan Peninsula to live among the grizzly bears, with the pretext of studying and protecting them. In 2003, his girlfriend Amie Huguenard and he were surprisingly attacked and ate by a bear. Werner Herzog somehow accessed more than one hundred hours of footages filmed by Timothy and released this documentary, showing the life and death of Timothy Treadwell.

The mother leaves, under the pretense of work, and the children must take care of each other.

Brotherly love has never been so…strange. While quite possibly the only comedy that’s somehow unsettling, frustrating, and even sad all at the same time, The Mamiya Brothers is also oddly endearing and, yes, funny, although not as uproariously so as one might expect. A recommendable picture if for no other reason than its insightful look at the underlying reasons why some nice guys always finish last. Based on the novel by Kaori Ekuni.

They choose an unlikely Korean exchange student Son (Doona Bae of Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance), even though her comprehension of Japanese is a bit rough! It’s a race against time as the group struggles to learn three tunes for the festival’s rock concert — including a classic ’80s punk-pop song by the famous Japanese group The Blue Hearts called “Linda Linda.”
