A masterpiece by director Hirokazu Koreeda and a winner in numerous film fests. “Nobody Knows” is based on a true events, somewhere in Tokyo. Four young children are secreted into a new flat by their transient immature mother, who decides to set down ground rules that will enable her to leave them to fend for themselves for long periods of time. The mother leaves, under the pretense of work, and the children must take care of each other.

Brotherly love has never been so…strange. While quite possibly the only comedy that’s somehow unsettling, frustrating, and even sad all at the same time, The Mamiya Brothers is also oddly endearing and, yes, funny, although not as uproariously so as one might expect. A recommendable picture if for no other reason than its insightful look at the underlying reasons why some nice guys always finish last. Based on the novel by Kaori Ekuni.

This film was originally released in 2005 and follows an all-girl high school rock band after an untimely break-up. Only three days before their high school festival, guitarist Kei (Yu Kashii), drummer Kyoto (Aki Maeda of Battle Royale), and bassist Nozumi (Shiori Sekine) must recruit a new lead vocalist for their band. They choose an unlikely Korean exchange student Son (Doona Bae of Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance), even though her comprehension of Japanese is a bit rough! It’s a race against time as the group struggles to learn three tunes for the festival’s rock concert — including a classic ’80s punk-pop song by the famous Japanese group The Blue Hearts called “Linda Linda.”

The Hidden Blade

Though less powerful than Mr. Yamada’s “Twilight Samurai” (2002), “The Hidden Blade” is an affecting portrait of the impact of profound change on people with limited options.

Boasting a screenplay by the late novelist Nozawa Hisashi (who committed suicide in 2004) and based on his identically titled book, about two girls affected by masscres. The first person traumatized is the lone survivor of the terrible family bloodbath, a girl who grows up to be a pretty college student played by Uchiyama Rina (from the TV series “Musashi”). The second person affected by this heinous crime is the daughter of the murderer, a young girl who ends up becoming a tattooed bartender played by Mizukawa Asami (from Go and 69). A full decade after the crime, the killer is finally going to be executed, and the surviving member of the massacre decides to reach out and befriend the murderer’s daughter. A tentative, odd sort of friendship blossoms between these two people, both of whom seem to have little in common personally, and every reason in the world for not wanting to meet. Yet they do, but not without reservations. And really, is this friendship quite what it seems? Or is it all part of some twisted plan for vengeance?

“Sister Act” Japanese rural style, with no mafias involved. Funny and feel-good story of the low-self-esteem high school girls’ revelation of fun and friendship through Jazz music. The actresses who acted jazz girls actually started learning all the instruments from scratch for the movie, and if you think about it, the ending performance by them is just amazing and moving. Combining the jazz music in the background, the movie really made me swing with them.
